James Millikin Homestead

Background

The James Millikin Homestead, located in Decatur, Illinois, is the former residence of James and Anna Millikin, founders of Anna B. Millikin Home, Millikin University, Millikin Bank, and Millikin Estate Trust. In June 1974, the Millikin Homestead was added to the National Register of Historic places.

Get Involved

The James Millikin Homestead, Inc., a not for profit corporation, was created in 1979 and is responsible for the maintenance and restoration of the interior of the Homestead. When you attend Homestead events or make a donation, you assist with the maintenance of this iconic piece of Decatur’s history.

Visit

Regularly scheduled open houses, private tours, rentals of the facility, fundraisers on location and off-site, educational presentations, and community events provide opportunities for all ages to experience the Homestead. Take a video tour of the Homestead.

History

Construction of the James Millikin Homestead began in July 1875, and continued into 1876. The home's exterior reflects the Italianate style, the roofs being the only exception. The roofs are Mansard style and are crested with wrought iron, common to the Second Empire style.
